The German European School Singapore (GESS) is a multi-lingual, not-for-profit, German international school in Singapore with a distinct European flavour. As an accredited ‘Excellent German School Abroad’, the German Section of GESS offers all major German school leaving certificates. Our European Section offers tuition in English for students from grade 1 - 12 across all three IB programmes (the PYP, the MYP and the IB Diploma Programme) as an authorised IB World School. Children aged 18 months onwards can enroll in our Preschool where children are following the PYP programme in German-speaking, English-speaking or bilingual groups. In addition to an outstanding academic education, GESS strives to teach students community values such as respect, openness and inclusion. Currently, more than 1800 students are learning at GESS supported by more than 400 full time and part time academic and administrative staff members. In August 2018 GESS moved to Dairy Farm Road to a modern new school campus located in a popular residential area at the edge of Singapore’s largest nature reserve and with very good access to the public transport system.

The Director of Technology is responsible for leading and overseeing the technology strategy, infrastructure of technical operations, and managing a team of IT employees. This includes advising and supporting the school management team in the planning and execution of the school’s IT roadmap, while ensuring smooth operations, managing technology budget and tracking technology assets. 
The Director of Technology will also be responsible for the IT roadmap, implementing appropriate technology solutions to meet the school’s needs focusing on operational and academic excellence. Collaboration with stakeholders in pedagogy, Educational Technology staff, Administration and third-party vendors on the agile build of applications designed for the end-user and aligned with the strategic implementation plan is essential. 
The Director of Technology should be knowledgeable in handling all IT solutions, maintain a stable technology platform, and eliminating security risks. Increase user satisfaction while maintaining operations and systems.

  • Ability to develop, communicate and drive the IT strategy roadmap, in line with school vision, mission, and strategy serving both educational and administrative needs.
  • Champions new ideas and develop plans for eventual migration, in coordination with overall IT planning.
  • Works the IT Sub Committee and the Board of Governors (when required) on the roadmap and implement the project portfolio.
  • Demonstrates strong personal leadership skills and thought leadership on relevant technology trends in education
  • Proven collaboration capabilities with all relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Propose strategic solutions and recommendations to improve the systems and software.
  • Analyze business requirements of all departments to determine their technology needs (pedagogy, administration, learning resources).
  • Responsible for IT budget, reports and manages IT projects budget through cooperation with the IT Sub Committee.
  • Establish and negotiate milestone dates and manage expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify the needs in the IT team and arrange for training development course, to develop and maintain a high functioning IT team with the latest technology skills
  • Build cross-functional project teams and monitor workforce plans, coordinating requirements for resource allocation, identify capability gaps across test-build-run platforms.
  • To translate business and department needs into organizational plans, roles, career paths, job descriptions and staffing requirements.
  • To drive strong performance management and continuous improvement culture.
  • To make decisions relating to the management of the full IT development team and contractors including deciding whether the development should occur in-house, to be outsourced or insourced.
  • Ensure use of technology to enhance efficient cooperation and global working across GESS community and make decision on which systems require to be replaced/introduced towards achieving the ‘One School’ goal.
  • Make decisions regarding technical requests, development standards and strategic direction of the team.
  • Finalize on processes and procedures for progress reporting.
  • Establish IT-related policies and procedures to support implementation of strategies. and are well understood by staff eg: Technology use policies, Disaster Recovery, Incident Management, BYOD, Endpoint protection policy, etc
  • Ensure safety and compliance of IT systems and data throughout GESS and, to cooperate with Internal Audit for IT risk.
  • Ensure use of technology to enhance efficient cooperation and global working across GESS community.
  • Ensure smooth running of service desks.
  • Unlock efficiency gains and cost savings by improving internal processes
  • To make decisions on end user devices, server and network (Inventory, enhancements, replacement plans) including managing own inventory and license management of hardware and software
  • Identification of pain points and creation of Data Highway leading to operational efficiency improvements for the Administration department
  • To put in place an Educational system with a One School objective built with a strong customer focus for parents and students such as Learning Management System, grading, attendance conferences, after school activities, medical, etc.
  • Ownership and improvement plan to strengthen GESS’s Cybersecurity and Data Protection posture
  • Improvement of Data standards and accuracy through clarification of data governance, framework and data cleansing where needed
  • Function as GESS Data Protection Officer
  • Build and test Business Continuity Plans related to IT at GESS
Requirements: Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Degree in computer science, information technology master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 8+ years of leadership experience in information technology in a medium or large sized, preferably cross-cultural international organization in a professional services and/or educational business environment.
  • An excellent working knowledge, and understanding, of current trends and developments in information technology.
  • Proven experience in IT infrastructure planning and development, project management and policy development.
  • Knowledge of business theory, business processes, management budgeting, and business office operations.
  • Excellent communication skills being able to work effectively in an intercultural school environment
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to handle the complexity of technology while communicating and working at a director/governance level with non-technical audiences.
  • Deep understanding of and has previously led medium/large-scale IT transformation programmes, managed change and implemented significant process improvement efforts.
  • Deep knowledge across customer experience, analytics and technology.
  • Proven ability to attract and hire top talent.
  • Must be able to build relationships across all levels and functions of the organization and effectively manage conflict.
